Item #3767 MAPPING THE TRANSMISSISSIPPI WEST, 1540-1861 (6 vols. first edition). Carl I. Wheat.

MAPPING THE TRANSMISSISSIPPI WEST, 1540-1861 (6 vols. first edition)

San Francisco: The Institute of Historical Cartography, 1957. 1st Edition. Hardcover. tall 4to, ca. 10.5" x 14.5" 6 books uniformly bound in 2 color buckram with gilt lettering on the spines. Considered by many to be the finest publication of a cartographic and bibliographic work in the United States. The books were designed bay Edwin and Robert Grabhorn and printed on high quality deckled- edge paper in a limited edition of 1000 sets. The work discusses 1302 maps of which 374 are reproduced. Outside is near fine - a little soiling, and inside they are fine. They were originally issued with brown paper dust and scratch protectors, however, as in this set, these were usually removed because the paper was cheaply made and tended to brown the books. No owner namers or bookplates noted inside. Overall, a near fine set. Due to size and weight of the set, shipping outside the USA will be extra expense. Near fine. Item #3767
