New Haven: F. M. Brown & Company, 1885. First Edition. Hardcover. quarto, letter copy book from the days when business and personal letter often had manuscript copies on thin paper in a book. The covers are detached but present. 496 page book of letter copies- only a few unused pages. There is an index at the front where names of correspondents are listed for each letter page. Moste letters near the front are signed "Brown & Bolton Co." while toward the back half they are signed "F. M. Brown & Co." While we don't know much about Brown and Bolton, The F. M. Brown company advertsed textiles and other imported goods a bit later in the 1890's. Most letters are business letters with some about unpaid bills and threats to blacklist the person for failure to pay, a small number appear to be personal letters - one about children misbehaving another about getting a crayon portrait made. There are pencil notes from a previous owner on the front free endpaper stating that the book belonged to D. S. Gamber (name difficult to read) who worked for Brown and Bolton, but we did not spot his signature with that name in the contents. The binding is poor due to detached covers, the contents generally good, many pages are also detached, some with frayed edges, browning, corners folded, but overall, contents are a good collection of business letters from a purveyor of textiles in the 1880's USA.
