Hardcover. bound in original brown cloth covered boards with blindstamped decoration that is moderately worn and soiled, corners bumped, contents lightly foxxed, several illustrations and a folding map. pp. vii, errata, map, 13- 303, and vii,errata, 9- 312 plus 24 pgs of Harper adverts at rear. Pagination of vol. I is implies some pages could be missing, but nothing seems missing, it might have been done in anticipation of additional front matter, or to account for the folding map. Stephens is best known for his later books with Frederick Catherwood as illustrator where he explored various Maya sites in Central America and brought them greater attention. The present work was published after return from Europe and the Middle East and went through at least 10 editions as people became familiar with his work and writing. This set has the book plate of L. Clarkson on each front pastedown and has his ink stamped name and date 1837 on the title pages of both volumes. Good / No Jacket. Item #4708
