Hardcover. thick quarto, uniformly bound in full light brown calf that has deteriorated to different degrees depending on the volume, several covers have been professionally re- attached retaining the original spine labels and back strips as much as possible. Edges of pages are marbled and endpaper and pastedowns are marbled. There is a pencil written name of earlier owner on free end papers in each volume. Paper in all volumes is age toned. First 2 volumes are the History of the Anglo- Saxons in stated second edition dated 1807- there is a folded hand colored map in very good condition in vol. 1. There is light foxing in these 2 vols.pp. x, 499 and vii, 472. The 3rd volume is From the Norman Conquest to the Accession od Edward thge First and is dated 1814 pp xv, 518 very little age toning of paper very little foxing, 4th vol. is also titled vol II from the accession of Edward the First to the Death of Henry the Fifth dated 1815 pp xv, 591. The 5th vol is also titled vol. III - during the Middle Ages- Comprizing the Reigns of Henry VI, Edward IV, Edward V, Richard III and Henry VII and is dated 1823 pp. xvi , 639 and has light age toning and light foxing of paper. The 6th volume is titled The History of the Reign of Henry the Eighth: Comprising the Political History of the Commencement of the English Reformation and is dated 1826 , pp xvi, 694 and has light foxing and age toning of paper, the 7th vol. is titled the History of the Reigns of Edward the Sixth, Mary, and Elizabeth and dated 1829, pp. xxiv, 736 and has little foxing and age toning of paper. Overall condition of set is very good- considering all the binding work that was done. It is likely that the original owner of this set got the volumes as they were published and combined them to make this set. There are sets published ca 1828 or later while these appear to be first editions- except for the first 2 volumes which are stated as second editions. Note that the publisher name changed somewhat over time. Note: due to size and weight, shipping outside the USA or priority shipping will cost more than an average book. Very good / No Jacket.
