Boston: Hilliard, Gray, Little and Wilkins, 1829. First Edition. Hardcover. octavo, ca. 5.5" x 9.5" pp. 395, scarce first edition of this work, but x- library copy with quite old library book plates on front pastedown and opposite the tirle page along with old ink note on the title page- one of these is dated 1861- others appear to be similar age. The book is quarterbound in old cloth with paper covered boards that are quite old and may be the original binding. Binding in fair condition. Pages are uncut. Paper is age toned which varies strongly as one approaches the exposed edges of the page- some pages are protected by those that protrude further, but exposed edges can be quite brown and somewhat brittle. There is some foxing that is generally light, but heavier on a few leaves toward the front and back of the book. Unfortunately, ca. 3/4 of the leaves containing pages 394, 394 and 395 are removed. Page 395 only has a few lines of text and all are present, but pages 393- 394 are lacking ca. 2/3 of the text. Overall, a fair to poor copy that is x- library, but a scarce first edition.
