Hardcover. smal folio, 5 volumes unbound but placed in original quarter bound with red cloth portfolios with cream color paper covered boards, condition of portfolios is generally very good with light to moderate wear, stain on the front cover of Commodes portfolio and on back of another- probably from contact. Red cloth ties all present and in good condition.
No Date noted, so 1930 is an estimate. Contents generally good to very good, paper for text is age toned, but plates are on higher quality paper and have less browning but they do have some browning which varies from book to book and plate to plate. Plates are all good to very good. No names or bookplates noted inside or outside the books.
Each volume consists of a title page followed by several pages of text, then a number of pages of description of the plates. An odd note is that the text on the page facing the title gives the list of the 5 volumes and states that each contains 52 plates- this is odd because all 5 volumes have 50 plates- 48 are images of the subject of the volume plus 2 of signatures of makers found on the items illustrated. Furthermore, the table of descriptions for the plates describe 48 plates of furniture. It is clear that 48 plus 2 of signatures is the correct number of plates for these volumes. It may be that 52 occur in a different edition and the page was not updated, or it may be that 52 is a typographic or editorial error. All 5 volumes have 50 plates as called for in the table in each volume. However, the volume "Les Petits Meuble" has 2 copies of PL. VII and is lacking PL XXVII, thus 249 of 250 plates expected for the set, are present, along with one duplicate.
