Artemus Ward His Book, His Travels, in London (3 vol.)
New York: Carleton, 1867. Hardcover. 12mo, 3 vol. bound in similar fashion but with different color bindings, light to moderate wear The spines have numbers 1, 2, 3 . The plates appear to be randomly bound in. All are present in Vol. 2 and 3, but 1 appears not to have been present in vol. 1 The Bibliography of American Literature entries 1527 and 1532 appear to describe vol. 2, 3, but vol. 1 "His Book" is not described. There is a bookplate in vol. 1 and blue pencil name of the same early owner, vol. 2 has the same bookplate, Vol. 3 has no bookplate. There are some light stains on the covers- not especially noticeable except on vol. 2. The name on the bookplates is Elizabeth Farley Underwood who appears to have been born in 1857 and died in 1959. The presence of the numbers in the spines suggests that the publisher assembled this set around the time of Browne's death in 1867. Vols. 1, 2 dated 1865 while 3 is dated 1867. The presence of the book plates in the first 2 vol. but not the third suggests that the 3rd was added to the set later. Unusual set by a great humorist. Very good. Item #7112
