Cambridge: Hilliard and Brown, 1831. First Edition. Hardcover. 12mo, quarter bound in tan cloth with tan paper covered boards with heavy wear- most of back strip is gone. Contents very dark from age and heavily foxed with some damp staining at top coming in from the bound edge in the back half of the book. There are 13 plates at the back and numerous references to the illustrations of gestures. The plates are foxed light the rest of the book. There is an ink inscription from the author to President Quincy on the front free endpaper and the ink name Josiah Quincy is on the front cover of the book. Presumably, this is Josiah Quincy who was President of Harvard in 1831. Overall, only a fair copy of this scarce work on an unusual subject. Fair. Item #7217
