Item #9109 Manual of the Railroads of the United States for 1870- 1871. Henry V. Poor.

Manual of the Railroads of the United States for 1870- 1871

New York: H. V. & H. W. Poor, 1870. Third Series. Hardcover. thick octavo, bound in original green color cloth covered boards with moderate wear and soiling, binding firmly attached to text block, contents are age toned, but generally very good, pagination is confusing but, pp. [40], title,[2],index of xii, [2], xviiii-xlii, 504, 60, [2] this suggests that some pages could be missing between xii and xviiii , but this is unclear- they may have kept page numbers from older edition and removed some that were no longer needed. Lots of advertisements at front and back. There are 2 leaves before the 504 pages Manual with information about the railroads over time- these have been cut away with about 1/3 missing from one leaf and about half missing from the other leaf. with the lettered pages and i-ii being adverts, pastedowns are also adverts and there are many adverts inside the book among the various descriptions of towns and histories in addition to the history of the railroad. There is some pencil writing on the front endpaper and an older price written. There a 5 typed pages and a couple with pencil writing placed at the front of the book. The typed pages describe Gridley Bryant who built the first railroad in the USA. These pages are held together with a rusty paper clip which is damaging the paper. Overall , a good copy. Note: due to size and weight, shipping outside the USA or Priority shipping will cot less than an average book. Good. Item #9109
